about

Bud Metal Records presents the spaced-out debut album "Cretaceous Skull" from British Columbian stoner rock/doom metal band VULCANODON PHAZER. Monolithic riffs and spacey effects combine to create this interstellar album of space rock and sludgy doom metal. Theremins and analog synths colour the Triceratops heavy riffs resulting in a unique stoner metal listen. The lyrics are inspired by such sci-fi writers as Frank Herbert, Philip K. Dick and Robert E. Howard and classic sci-fi movies of the 60's and 70's. Musically influenced by space rock legends like Monster Magnet, Kyuss and Hawkwind. Fans of classic psychedelic rock and modern doom metal will trip out with the epic sonic journeys presented here.

Reviews:

"Vulcanodon Phazer was formed (and will continue this way) to pay tribute to the Stoner / Doom / Space scene, a mutual passion for both members involved. The fun starts with Heather Hustle And Cherry Fast, opening little psychedelic and twisted, with hints of Pentagram, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath initially. It comes with ultimately heavy and megalithic riffs (Sleep, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Yob and the likes), including totally spacy effects (hello Hawkwind!), loads of elements inspired by late-Sixties and Seventies Rock (Led Zeppelin, Pentagram, Deep Purple) and rather modernised frenzy à la Kyuss and Monster Magnet. Isn’t that a great introduction, an invitation to go on? I thought so…"
"The string section is enormously and intense, traditional in performance, but heavily balanced, with little simplistic yet pounding melodies. Both leads and rhythm guitar melodies are equally balanced in performance, giving that esoteric (got it?) panache to their specific identity. Sometimes it is sludgy, then again droning, yet always colossal and thundering. Guitars and basses are supported by improvised drum patterns, sometimes even unprepared, it seems, yet that shows the spontaneous attitude of this project. Spacy and hallucinatory additions strengthen the gloomy, hazy, smoky atmosphere. And then you have the vocals: unclean, unstable, false, yet oh so appropriate and fitting."

"Well, I don't smoke (sorry to burst your bubble), but I imagine this sounds even more retrograde to a listener that's under the influence. There is nothing modern, trendy or particularly stylish about Vulcanodon. Just sludgy riffage piled on thick, with everything else buried further down in the mix.
Okay, that is a style. It's totally outside the norm, and it's awesome. If you ever need something to literally scare the shit out of you, this album would be the perfect laxative. It'll clean you out, and then some.
Play it loud. And then play it louder. There is a lot buried behind the wall of guitar, and much of it is pretty interesting. Getting through this album is a bit like running a 5k in three feet of mud. By the end, all you'll want to do is wallow. Vulcanodon proves you can have your sludge and drink it, too."

"With so much stoner rock out there which follows the same syrupy SAB-4 recipe. It is a fun welcome to hear a band like VULCANODON PHAZER take the genre in another direction. This Canadian two piece act is not reinventing here. Instead they're taking us back a few decades when spacing out was all part of the genre exploration. The seven cuts on this their debut full length take you on a serene and contemplative journey.
Now with the heaviness of doom the duo invokes plenty of psych damage and effects into the instrumentation. There's definitely a late 60s/early 70's influence when the synths and theremin are applied. On one of their instrumental cuts, "THC Speedwagon", the band is channeling psych era PINK FLOYD from the interstellar void. The song which follows, "Valkyrian Love", comes off like HAWKWIND driven through some distorted sludgey much. Most of their other cuts combine everything above mentioned with a bevy of 90's era Southern California stoner rock. Welcome to some heavy duty jamming and no tie dye shirts allowed."

"Kind of a stoner and a little doom, a bit post metal with some kind of raw production."

"Kelowna is a city of British Columbia in Canada. It is located by Lake Okanagan and a popular vacation place. The band Vulcanodon Phazer didn't have time for vacation as they continually make exciting and good stoner doom music.."

"This is a band that is influenced by the glorious metal days of the early 80s and 90s. However, the competitive advantage of this band is the fact that they implement these influences in a quite entertaining way. The fuzzy guitars and the Stoner meets pro-Metal sound is an awesome mix that will entertain all your senses."
